Why does your mindset matter when you’re running an art business? It’s not always easy to balance life, art, and business. Purposefully adopting a positive mindset can help you stay resilient and adaptable through it all.
Do you believe that your thoughts create your reality? Whether you’re “woo” or not, you’ve got to admit that believing in yourself and in your own success is more likely to bring you a positive outcome than worrying or getting down on yourself. Here are my suggestions for maintaining a positive state of mind so you can stay in the game for the long term.
What You Can Do, or Dream You Can, Begin It; Boldness Has Genius, Power, and Magic in It.
—John Anster, inspired by Goethe
1 | Maintain a “marketing mindset.” This tip is not woo at all! You should be thinking of yourself as a small business owner if your goal is selling your work. You’re the one in charge of marketing your work, whether you work with galleries or not. Approach your business with an open mind, have the courage to try new things, and learn from your mistakes. You’ll build confidence as you go.
2 | Switch from worry to gratitude. When you’re in a state of worry, it makes you play small, and you’ll find that you’re afraid to make decisions in your business. Gratitude for what you do have is a much more effective mindset. Find out what a “gratitude slam” is and how you can use it to stay energized. 3 | Do something to rest your mind on a daily basis. Something meditative, contemplative. Read, walk, get outdoors, meditate, do yoga. Find a practice that helps you clear your mind and start fresh. When you slow down and listen, you might be surprised at the inspiration that comes to you!
4 | Take time off! You’re the boss of your business, aren’t you? Often we are the worst bosses, but you’ll be rewarded by more creativity and productivity if you give yourself some time to decompress.
5 | Do something for yourself. Go for a workout, get outdoors for a hike or a walk, or do some gardening. Or visit a botanical garden, go for a pedicure, or take yourself out to lunch. Whatever it is, take some time to do something that feeds your soul.
6 | Work with a coach or support group where you can talk about business stuff and your mindset. Get the support you need to get of out of any negative funks that you might get into. Because they are inevitable. And we can’t do it alone!
